TWJ-ISRAEL holds lectures delivered by accomplished professional journalists.
The “Conflict in Pictures” lecture will focus on three major subjects that Ilan has confronted in his journalistic career.
Jerusalem is the main subject Ilan will address during the lecture. In December 2008 Ilan published Existence, a book of black & white photographs taken during 14 years of field work in Jerusalem.
Existence documents the atmosphere in Jerusalem:
The second subject that Ilan will address at his lecture is “the conflict of the Israelis with themselves”. Ilan began working as a photojournalist in 1995, during the days of Yitzhak Rabbin’s assassination. Since that time Ilan has photographed and filmed Jewish communities in the Gaza strip and Judea and Samaria (the "West Bank"), building a strong relationship of trust and mutual respect during a time when the media was not welcome in the settlers' communities. For many years Ilan was the middleman between the settlers and the international media and provided a reliable channel for the settlers to tell their side of the story.
In 2009, Ilan was asked by Al Jazeera’s English TV Channel to make a 45 minute documentary film about the “Rise of the right” in Israel following the elections that brought a government led by Benjamin Netanyahu. "Rise of the Right" was broadcast four times and been viewed by more than 40 million people worldwide. Ilan is currently working on two more documentary films about the settlers’ communities. In these films Ilan seeks to explain the paradox of Israeli politics regarding the settlers.
The final issue at the lecture will deal with the wars and conflicts Israel has had with her neighbors in the last decade. Ilan has covered these conflicts in Israel for his entire carrier and was asked to write two articles for “Digital Journalist” about his personal experience during the wars with Hezbollah in Lebanon in 2006, and with Hamas in the Gaza strip in 2008/9.
